How to use Selective Sync

Written by Mathias

📖 What is Selective Sync?

Selective Sync gives you full control over which folders from your Onlime account should be mirrored to your computer. It is a smart way to save space on your hard drive while still having access to all your files in the cloud.

Good to know:

  • You can configure Selective Sync both during installation and later in the app settings.

  • Folders you deselect are removed from your computer but remain safely stored in Onlime.

  • Your files are always available online, even if they are not synced to your device.

Guide: Configure Selective Sync during installation

1. Find the sync setting

By setting up Selective Sync from the start, you ensure that only necessary files take up space on your computer.

  1. Follow the installation guide until you reach the screen Turn on your sync folder. Here you will get a brief introduction to the sync function.

2. Select the folders you want to sync

Now you can choose exactly which folders should be mirrored to your device. This prevents your hard drive from being unnecessarily filled up.

  1. Click the Select folders button. A new window opens showing all the folders in your Onlime cloud.

3. Confirm your choices

Review your choices to ensure that only the folders you need locally are synchronized.

  1. Under Which folders do you want to sync to this device?, check the boxes for the folders you want to have on your computer.

  2. Click Confirm to save your settings and continue the installation.

👉 Onlime will now begin mirroring the selected folders to your computer in the background.

✅ Your sync settings are now saved!

Guide: Adjust Selective Sync in the app

1. Go to the Sync tab

You can adjust your settings at any time to free up space or add new folders for synchronization.

  1. Open the Onlime app on your computer and click the Sync tab in the menu on the left.

2. Open sync settings

From here, you can manage which folders should be synchronized in the background.

  1. Click the three-dot menu (...) next to the Open sync folder button.

3. Select folders for synchronization

Now choose the folders you wish to mirror to your device.

  1. Select Choose folders to sync from the dropdown menu. A new window opens with a list of all your folders in the cloud.

4. Save your changes

When you save, Onlime will automatically update the files on your computer to match your new choices.

  1. Under What do you want to sync to this device?, check or uncheck the boxes next to the relevant folders.

  2. Click Done to save. The window closes, and Onlime updates your sync folder.

👉 Onlime now automatically updates your sync folder in the background to reflect your new choices.

✅ Your local storage is now optimized according to your preferences.

☁️ Deselected folders remain in the cloud

Folders you deselect are only removed from your computer. They are still safely stored in the cloud and can be accessed via our web app at cloud.onlime.dk ↗.

If you need a file from a deselected folder, you can always download files and folders manually ↗ directly from the cloud.

💾 Free up space on your computer

Selective Sync is an effective way to manage your storage space. When you deselect a folder, Onlime automatically removes the local files while the secure copy is preserved in the cloud.

🔄 Understanding the difference between Sync and Backup

Remember that the sync folder acts as a mirror. If you delete a file from the sync folder on your computer, it is also deleted in the cloud.

For permanent and secure storage where files are only deleted when you actively choose to do so, we recommend using our Backup function. Read more about the difference between Sync and Backup ↗

🛑 How to deactivate synchronization completely

If you wish to stop synchronization entirely, you can select Disable sync in the settings menu. This will remove the sync folder from your computer, but all your files will remain safely in the cloud.

ℹ️ Selective Sync provides peace of mind, especially on devices with limited storage, as you never have to worry about running out of space.
