How to get started with the new Onlime app for Windows/Mac

Learn how to update the Onlime app on Windows and Mac – automatically or manually – and your settings will be transferred automatically.

🎯 In short: How Onlime is updated to the new app.

Here you will find an overview of the transition and answers to various questions you might have. If you use the current Onlime app, all settings (e.g., folders for backup, schedule, or Onlime Sync) will be automatically transferred to the new app.

How Onlime updates on Windows

When it is your turn (and if you are using Windows 10 or later), Onlime will update automatically, and you will see the update guide, which transfers your existing settings automatically so you can pick up where you left off.

When the Onlime app is updated, the first thing you see is a message from Windows User Account Control (UAC). It asks for permission to install the new Onlime app – this happens automatically and is not initiated by you.

Click Yes to allow the installation. The app then downloads the new version:

When the installation is finished, the new app opens automatically, and you will see the window with the new features:

How Onlime updates on Mac

On Mac, the update guide starts automatically if you are using macOS 10.15 or later and when it is your turn 😃. The first thing you see is the window where your settings are being transferred:

Onlime imports your settings on Mac

After the update, you may be asked to give Onlime access to your folders and photo library again. This is necessary so the app can access the folders you have added to backup ↗. Click Give Access to All Photos or Allow to continue.

✅ Once the update is complete, your files remain secured

The transition to the new app does not affect your files in Onlime, and they will continue to be secured in Onlime.

Once the update is complete, you can, for example, set up selective sync ↗, see the photo timeline, and much more.

Install and update manually

If you are impatient or do not find that the update starts automatically, you can update manually.

  1. Download and install the new app manually from onlime.dk ↗.

  2. The same update guide will then start automatically, where your settings are transferred automatically and the old app is removed. So you don't have to wait for the notification.

Good to know

💻 Are you running an older operating system?

If you are not offered the update, it is because you are running a version older than Windows 10 or macOS 10.15. The old Onlime app will continue to function without further action, and you do not need to do anything.

🤔 Will my files be deleted?

No. The update does not change your files. They remain secured in the cloud and on your computer, exactly as you know them.

🔄 Do I need to configure my backup again?

No. Your existing backup and sync configurations are automatically transferred to the new app. You do not need to go through your settings again.

⏳ Can I wait to update?

Yes. The old app will continue to work until you update. We do not have a fixed date for when the old app will no longer be usable – and we will inform you in good time when that changes.

↩️ Can I go back to the old app?

Yes, it is possible. Uninstall the new app and install the old version again. Contact Onlime support, and we will help you with a link to the old app.

📦 What happens to the old app?

When you update, the new app replaces the old one. If you install manually, the old app is automatically removed.
