🎯 TL;DR: The Trash is where your deleted and modified files end up – and you can restore them for up to 30 days.
What is the Trash?
The Trash on Onlime.dk ↗ works like the trash bin on your computer. When you delete or modify a file or folder in Onlime, it is moved to the Trash instead of disappearing immediately.
Files and folders in the Trash are kept for 30 days before being permanently deleted.
After 30 days, there is no way to restore them.
Which files end up in the Trash?
There are two ways files can end up in the Trash:
Files you delete yourself
All files you actively delete are moved to the Trash – both when you:
delete files on Onlime.dk ↗
delete files on your computer in folders you have added to backup ↗ or in Onlime Sync ↗
Files that are modified, renamed or moved
When you have automatic backup of your folders ↗, Onlime continuously updates new and changed files. When a file is edited or renamed, the older version is moved to the Trash.
The latest version of a file always remains where you placed it – it is never deleted unless you do so yourself.
Previous versions ↗ placed in the Trash are copies that already exist on our servers. These are not the original files, but duplicates that would otherwise sit idle.
There are many files in the Trash – what should you do?
Don’t panic. As explained above, there can be perfectly normal reasons for many files in the Trash. But if you cannot find a cause, you should do a thorough review.
Such a review can include:
Get an overview of your data on the devices you have backed up. Check whether folders and files are where they usually are.
Assess whether you have recently made changes – e.g. installed new programs, formatted a hard drive, or simply cleaned up.
Check which shared folders ↗ you have. Have many changes happened in a shared folder?
If you use Onlime Sync ↗, you can also get an overview of folders and files there.
Start by mapping your main folders and work your way through the subfolders.
Restore files from the Trash
You can restore files back to their original location in Onlime:
Select one or more files (click the field in the top left to select all)
Click the button (...) and select Restore
⚠️ Note: Content from Backup cannot be restored directly from the Trash.
The Restore button only appears for files and folders originating from Sync and Archive. If you need to restore content from Backup, you must select it and download it from the Trash on Onlime.dk ↗. We are working on improving this.
Empty the Trash
If you want to free up space on your account, you can empty the Trash ↗.
Click Empty Trash
Confirm with Delete permanently
⚠️ When you empty the Trash, all files and folders are deleted permanently. There is no way to restore them.
Worth knowing
Email notification about deleted files
If our system sends you an email about deleted files, it is simply a notification. It usually means many files were changed in a short period – for example, if you moved a large folder or a program updated a batch of files. Learn more about which folders to back up ↗.
File versions
Onlime keeps changed and deleted files for 30 days and stores up to the 5 most recent versions of all files. You can access previous versions by right-clicking a file in Backup, Sync, or Archive (outside the Trash) and selecting Versions.
